Seated Practice with Mudras

Teacher's Guide: Mudra Practice with Students – "Yoga for Your Fingers"

Introduce your students to the calming power of mudras, or "Yoga for Your Fingers," with this step-by-step guide.

1. Introduce the Practice

Explain to students:“Today, we’ll explore 'Yoga for Your Fingers' with mudras—hand gestures that can help us feel calm, focused, and balanced. Let’s combine these with deep breathing to see how they can change how we feel.”

2. Set the Scene

  • Create a calm environment with soft lighting and optional background music.

  • Have students sit comfortably with feet flat and hands resting on their laps.

  • Encourage them to sit tall and relax their shoulders.

3. Teach Belly Breathing

Guide students:

  • Place one hand on your belly.

  • Inhale deeply through your nose, feeling your belly rise.

  • Exhale slowly through your mouth, feeling your belly fall.

Repeat three times, focusing on deep, slow breaths.

4. Introduce Mudras

  • Demonstrate each mudra, explaining its purpose and how to hold it.

  • Guide students through holding each mudra while taking three deep breaths.

  • Encourage students to close their eyes and focus on their breathing during the practice.

5. Allow Students to Choose Their Mudra

Ask:“Which mudra felt the most calming or helpful to you? Let’s practice it again with three deep breaths.”

6. Optional Sharing

Invite students to share:“Would anyone like to share which mudra they chose and how it made them feel?”
